What oil do you use on a chopping board?

When it comes to caring for your chopping board, the oil you choose matters. Some oils can damage or discolor the board over time, while others help maintain its quality and appearance. Opting for food-grade mineral oil is your best bet. Unlike vegetable and olive oils, mineral oil won’t go rancid or leave a greasy residue. Simply apply a thin layer of mineral oil to all surfaces of the board, allow it to soak in for a few hours, then wipe away any excess. Doing this every few weeks will keep your chopping board looking great and functioning smoothly for years to come.

Can I use olive oil to oil my cutting board?

Olive oil, should never be used to maintain a cutting board or butcher block. Nor should you use corn oil, and sunflower oil.
These oils experience Rancidification – a process of complete or incomplete autoxidation or hydrolysis of fats and oils when exposed to air, light, moisture, or bacterial action, producing short-chain aldehydes, ketones and free fatty acids.
As a cutting board touches your food, substances that can turn rancid should be avoided.

What oil do you use on a chopping board Australia?

The wooden cutting board is a staple in Australian kitchens. When caring for this essential tool, it’s important to choose the right oil to maintain its integrity. Food-grade mineral oils are often recommended, as they safely penetrate deep into the wood grain to keep boards from drying out and cracking over time. Unlike vegetable and olive oils, mineral oil won’t go rancid or impart flavors. With regular oiling, a quality wooden chopping board can last for many years of slicing, dicing and meal prep. For the optimal food-safe finish, choose a food-grade mineral oil made specially for cutting boards. This will ensure your chopping board stays in top condition for all your culinary endeavors.

What is the best way to oil a cutting board?

When caring for a wood cutting board, properly oiling it is essential. Experts recommend using a food-grade mineral oil to condition the board at least every few months. Applying a thin coat of oil across the entire surface helps seal the wood, preventing stains and cracks. Massage the oil in well using a cloth or brush. Allow it to soak in overnight, then wipe away any excess. Oiling a cutting board keeps the wood from drying out so it stays strong and beautiful for many years of meal prep. With this simple routine, your board will provide a sturdy, sanitary chopping surface for fruits, vegetables, meat and more.

How To Oil A Chopping Board

Now that you have the best oil for chopping boards Australia, with these few simple steps, you’ll be adding years to the life of your favourite kitchen accessory.

Clean your board
Besides the regular cleaning you should be doing after each use, you need to give it a thorough clean before you oil the board.

Tip…
If your board has stains or smells, you can use lemon juice or white vinegar directly on the area.
The acid in these liquids will neutralise the organic material or fats causing the problem.

Allow time to dry
After a thorough clean, leave your board out in the open air to dry. It’s best to do this overnight so you can ensure that no moisture is trapped deep inside the wood grains.

Oil your board
Take your chopping board oil, use and soak a clean, dry rag with it. In slow and steady movements, coat the surface of the board with enough oil so that you can see it.

Allow the oil to dry
After applying the oil, you’ll need to leave the board again to dry completely. Try let it sit overnight for the best results.

Remove excess
Check the surface of your board the following day to see if you need to remove any excess oil.

If the surface is sticky or oily feeling, get a new, dry cloth and make small circular motions over the top to remove any remaining oil.

Tip…
The first time you oil your board, you can be a little more generous with the oil as this will allow it to reach deep into the surface.

Once the board has been broken in, only apply enough oil to cover the surface without applying too much.
